Fullmetal Alchemist: A 2024 Review of Hiromu Arakawa’s Iconic Manga
It's 2024, and it feels like we're in the middle of a nostalgic renaissance of manga stories.Classic series are making a huge comeback, with new anime adaptations announced for some of our old favorites.
Plus, there's been a noticeable uptick in people collecting physical manga again. It's like we're all reconnecting with the stories that first got us hooked on this amazing medium!
Today i’ll share my thoughts on Fullmetal Alchemist by Hiromu Arakawa.
If you’re a science enthusiast, this manga series is a perfect read for you. The story seamlessly blends scientific concepts with fantasy, creating a rich and engaging world that's both intellectually stimulating and emotionally compelling. The book was a total hit, being sold out everywhere, and let me tell you why it was such a hype.
Edward and Alphonse
Fullmetal Alchemist tells the story of two brothers, Edward and Alphonse Elric, who lose their bodies in a failed alchemical experiment to resurrect their mother. Edward, the eponymous Fullmetal Alchemist, loses an arm and a leg, while Alphonse loses his entire body, his soul bound to a suit of armor. Their quest for the Philosopher’s Stone to restore their bodies leads them into a web of conspiracy and danger.
One of the series' standout features is its richly developed characters. Edward is a short-tempered, determined young alchemist with a strong sense of justice. His unique quirks and flaws make him a memorable protagonist. Alphonse, despite being trapped in a suit of armor, is kind-hearted and often the voice of reason. Their dynamic is heartwarming and adds emotional depth to their journey.
The supporting characters are equally compelling. From the mysterious homunculi to the steadfast military officers like Roy Mustang and Riza Hawkeye, each character is well-developed and integral to the story. The villains in Fullmetal Alchemist are particularly noteworthy, with complex motivations and backgrounds that make them more than just antagonists.
Hiromu Arakawa’s art style is another highlight of the series. The character designs are distinct and expressive, making each character easily recognizable. The settings evoke an alternate England, with detailed environments that enhance the storytelling. The action scenes are fast-paced and well-executed, balancing intense battles with emotional moments.
The plot intricacies are well-crafted, with early mysteries and plot points resolved in satisfying ways. The story explores themes of sacrifice, the consequences of ambition, and the power of family bonds. The ethical implications of alchemy are also a recurring topic, giving readers plenty to ponder. For those who love the intersection of science and magic, Fullmetal Alchemist provides a thoughtful and thrilling exploration of both. Its rich story, memorable characters, and unique art make it a timeless piece that continues to captivate readers.
